And they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He would touch them, but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them. But Jesus called for them, saying, "Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all."
Abilene Bible Church has been one of the earliest and longest participants in the AWANA program in the Abilene area. AWANA is an acronym that stands for Approved Workman Are Not Ashamed and is a “Bible club” based on II Timothy 2:15:
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. (NIV)
The Abilene Bible Church AWANA program is part of a large international organization founded over 60 years ago in Illinois. See links at the bottom for further details of the history of the AWANA program.
The Abilene Bible Church AWANA program has clubs for ages 2 through high school. The AWANA schedule generally follows the Abilene Independent School District calendar and meets on Wednesday afternoons and evenings during the school year, 4:00-5:30 PM for the high school (Journey Club, grades 9 - 12) .
Junior high (Trek Club, grades 7-8) also meets from 4:00-5:30 PM. Grade 2 (Puggles) through 6th grade (Truth & Training) meet from 6:00-7:30 PM. We also encourage our teen clubbers to put their faith in action by participating in the Leader-in-Training Program.
A typical AWANA night consists of three periods where the clubber participates in individual or small group time where the clubber recites memorized verses and accomplishes lessons, large group time where accompanying topics are taught and discussed, and the always popular game time.
Currently, our program is on summer break but will resume in September, so please stay tuned for further details. Ministry opportunities exist within our program as we have vacancies at many levels.
